Grinding versus digging a stump out
Grinding uses a carbide wheel to chew the stump into mulch, typically six to twelve inches below grade — deep enough to plant grass over, and deep enough for most replanting if you cut a fresh hole beside it rather than in it. Excavating the whole root plate with a machine costs several times as much, wrecks the surrounding lawn, and is only necessary if you are pouring a foundation or a pool over the spot.
The by-product is a surprising amount of chip. A stump grinds into roughly twice the volume of the stump itself, mounded over the hole. You can leave it as backfill — it settles over a season — or we haul it and bring in topsoil. Decide before we start; it changes the price.

Every grind we do starts with an 811 locate for public utilities, and we ask you to flag private lines — sprinkler heads and landscape lighting are not on the locate.

General liability and workers' compensation, with the certificate sent before you book. Texas does not license tree services at state level, so this is the question that actually filters a bid list.

Stump Grinding — frequently asked
Can I plant a new tree where the old stump was in North Texas?
Not directly in the same hole. Even ground to twelve inches, the remaining root mass decays for years, robs nitrogen as it does, and leaves a void that settles. Plant three to four feet to the side, or grind deep and excavate the chip out and replace with topsoil if the location matters.
Do you remove the roots as well as the stump?
Grinding takes the stump and the surface roots radiating from it. It does not chase lateral roots across the yard — those decay in place over several years and are rarely a problem. If you are building over the spot, tell us and we will price full root-plate excavation instead.
Do you charge extra for difficult access?
It is priced into the quote rather than added afterwards. Access is the single biggest cost driver in this trade, which is why we look at every job in person instead of quoting from a description.
Do you give free estimates in North Texas?
Yes. Someone comes out, looks at the tree, and you get a written price with the scope spelled out — no charge and no obligation. We do not quote tree work over the phone from a description, because the things that change the price (access, what is underneath, how the wood has to come out) are not visible from a description.
Do you clean up afterwards?
Completely. Brush chipped and hauled, wood removed or stacked as you prefer, ground raked and blown off. We walk the site with you before we leave. Clean-up is included in the quoted price — it is not a line item that appears later.
Can you work around my schedule?
Usually. Most residential work happens on weekdays during business hours, but we can often arrange early starts or a specific day if access, pets or gates require it. Commercial properties routinely get after-hours or weekend scheduling.
Do you serve areas outside North Texas?
Yes — our regular territory covers Tarrant, Johnson, Parker, Hill and Bosque Counties and the cities inside them. North Texas is on our normal route.
What happens to the wood chips?
They leave with us by default. If you want them, say so — chip is good mulch, it is free, and it is better for beds than most of what is sold in bags. Just keep it off the trunk.
