The ground under Southlake is sandy loam over clay, typical of the Eastern Cross Timbers. Soil pH runs around 6.0–7.0, which is why post oak decline shows up here so consistently — post oaks are exceptionally intolerant of root disturbance, grade changes and summer irrigation, and a healthy-looking one can die two years after the driveway went in.
